Ventura County, CA

What is A Movement Chaplain?

Movement

We use the word movement because we are rooted in community organizing, public witness, and collective action for justice. Movements arise when people respond to harm such as racism, anti-Blackness, colonization, state violence, economic exploitation, environmental injustice, anti-trans and anti-immigrant policies and work together toward collective liberation.

Movement spaces carry courage, grief, risk, surveillance, and spiritual weight. They are sacred and vulnerable spaces.

Chaplain

A chaplain is someone trained to offer grounded spiritual and emotional accompaniment in intense or transitional moments. Chaplains do not lead the action. They do not control outcomes. They do not try to recruit or push religion.

Movement Chaplain

A movement chaplain is a trained practitioner of care who offers grounded, trauma aware spiritual and emotional accompaniment in movement spaces, such as vigils, direct actions, organizing meetings, and moments of crisis. Movement chaplains may serve in frontline roles, providing in person support during actions, or in backline roles, coordinating care, logistics, check ins, and follow up so no one carries the weight alone. They do not lead the action, control outcomes, or impose belief. They practice consent, confidentiality, and disability access, and they support people’s dignity, safety, grief, and resilience before, during, and after intense events.

Movement chaplaincy is rooted in solidarity with communities most targeted by harm by policing, and state violence. Movement chaplains follow the leadership of those most impacted and resist saviorism, so care strengthens collective liberation, healing and wellness rather than centering the chaplain.

Care that sustains movements

Movement chaplains offer grounded, trauma-aware spiritual and emotional accompaniment for movement work. We practice consent, dignity, and confidentiality, and we aim to support sustainable, liberatory work in the midst of systems shaped by white supremacy, anti-Blackness, anti-Immigration, and colonization.

We offer care by invitation: no assumptions, no forced prayer, no pressure...just options, consent, and steady presence.

A movement chaplain may:

  • Offer grounded presence at actions, vigils, meetings, court support, and other high-intensity community moments, by invitation.

  • Provide calm, non-judgmental listening, help people slow down, and support decision-making without judgement, fixing, advising, or controlling.

  • Support de-escalation and conflict navigation when appropriate, and help reduce harm in tense moments.

  • Offer grief support, companionship, and space for emotional and spiritual processing after distressing events.

  • Provide simple, consent-based spiritual care, including prayer, ritual, silence, or reflection, when requested, without coercion or assumptions.

  • Support access needs and care coordination, including water, snacks, quiet space, rest breaks, and connecting people to additional resources.

  • Help people plan for sustainable engagement, including boundaries, pacing, and aftercare, so care does not reproduce urgency culture.

  • Maintain confidentiality and safety practices, and communicate clearly about limits and coordination needs.

Guidelines for Safety & Boundaries

We are a volunteer network. We are not a crisis hotline, not medical providers, and not a substitute for emergency services. If someone is in immediate danger or needs urgent medical help, contact local emergency services.

We move at the speed of trust. We go in teams, no one is isolated. We honor different levels of vulnerability.

For safety, we do not publish chaplain identities, action locations, or event details. We confirm specifics privately after we confirm fit and capacity.

Do you carry gifts for the movement?

Not everyone is called to serve as a movement chaplain, and that is more than okay. The 805 Movement Chaplains community is also looking to build a network of experienced practitioners who can offer wisdom and skill when the need arises. If you bring deep experience in trauma-informed healing, somatic practice, nonviolent direct action training, or spiritual care, we would love to know you exist.

I have a gift to share - form coming soon!
